Jatropha
| Jatropha, is well recognized as a source of energy in the form of biodiesel. Further it's capability to sustain in harsh environment, short gestation period, high oil recovery and quality oil has also helped in the promotion of Jatropha as a alternate source of energy. |
Distribution and Habitat
Jatropha adapts to various kinds of climates and soils & can grow on any type of soil like gravely, sandy or saline, stony soils and rock crevices.
Some salient points on Jatropha plant are:
• It is a drought resistant perennial plant living up to 50 years.
• The tree grows up to a height of 3 meters which allows easy harvesting of the seeds
• Some hybrid varieties of Jatropha can give three harvests a year
• Jatropha seeds contain about 35% of non-edible oil |
